Specification for Drilling andProduction Hoisting EquipmentAPI SPECIFICATION 8ATHIRTEENTH EDITION,DECEMBER 1997EFFECTIVE DATE:MAY 1998AmericanPetroleumInstituteInformation Handling Services.2000Specification for Drilling andProduction Hoisting EquipmentExploration and Production DepartmentAPI SPECIFICATION 8ATHIRTEENTH EDITION.DECEMBER 1997EFFECTIVE DATE:MAY 1998AmericanPetroleumInstituteInformation Handling Services.2000FOREWORDThis specification is under the jurisdiction of the API Subcommittee on Standardization ofDrilling and Servicing Equipment.A new standard for Drilling and Production Hoisting Equipment,Spec 8C,has beenissued to provide two higher levels of production specifications for hoisting equipment thannow covered by Spec 8A.American Petroleum Institute(API)Specifications are published as aids to the procure-ment of standardized equipment and materials,as well as instructions to manufacturers ofequipment or materials covered by an API Specification.These Specifications are notintended to obviate the need for sound engineering.nor to inhibit in any way anyone frompurchasing or producing products to other specifications.The formulation and publication of API Specifications and the API monogram programare not intended in any way to inhibit the purchase of products from companies not licensedto use the API monogram.API Specifications may be used by anyone desiring to do so,and diligent effort has beenmade the Institute to assure the accuracy and reliability of the date contained therein.How-ever,the Institute makes no representation,warranty,or guarantee in connection with thepublication of any API Specification and hereby expressly disclaims any liability or respon-sibility for loss or damage resulting from their use,or municipal regulation with which anAPI Specification may conflict,or for the infringement of any patent resulting from the useof an API Specification.Any manufacturer producing equipment or materials represented as conforming with anAPI Specification is responsible for complying with all the provisions of that SpecificationThe American Petroleum Institute does not represent,warrant or guarantee that such prod-ucts do in fact conform to the applicable API standard or specification.This Standard shall become effective on the date printed on the cover but may be used vol-untarily from the date of distribution.API publications may be used by anyone desiring to do so.Every effort has been made bythe Institute to assure the accuracy and reliability of the data contained in them;however,theInstitute makes no representation,warranty,or guarantee in connection with this publicationand hereby expressly disclaims any liability or responsibility for loss or damage resultingfrom its use or for the violation of any federal,state,or municipal regulation with which thispublication may conflict.Suggested revisions are invited and should be submitted to the director of the Explorationand Production Department,American Petroleum Institute,1220 L Street,N.W.,Washing-ton,D.C.20005Information Handling Services.2000
