A good many of foreign movies and television programs appear at domestic culture market. Especially the sitcoms. However,if audiences would like to appreciate those exotic cultures or customs, they need to overcome the obstacles of the language. This thesis aims to explore the translation strategies of the humor subtitles. The paper first introduces the humor and the functional equivalence theory and then analyzes different translation methods of the three kinds of humors in TWO BROKE GIRLS. Key Words: humor; subtitles; functional equivalence theory; translation strategies 摘 要 随着国际交流的日益频繁,越来越多的外国电影电视剧,尤其是情景喜剧出现在我国的文化市场中。但是观众们若是想要了解国外的风土人情,就必须要克服语言不通这一障碍。因此,字幕翻译的地位就显得尤为重要了。本篇论文旨在研究言语幽默类型下字幕的不同翻译策略。首先介绍了幽默和功能对等理论两个概念。其次,本文再以美剧《破产姐妹》为例,研究三种幽默类型所对应的不同的翻译策略。 关键词:幽默;字幕;功能对等理论;翻译策略 Contents 1. Introduction With the arrival of the information age and the background of globalization, film and television program coming to the worldwide stage which are served as carriers spread specific nations histories, culture, morals or values, and unfold all kinds of scrolls of alien practices and lives before the indigenous people. The way enabling Chinese to appreciate exotic film and television program plots in order to understand western mainstream thinking patterns is to translate foreign language into native language. In this way, subtitlers first roll out on stage. This paper introduces subtitle translation, humor and its translation, American situation comedy and translation strategies of humorous lines on the basis of Eugene Nida’s Functional Equivalence Theory to the public that draw increasing number of scholars’ attentions to focus on the advancement of this newly sprouted area and do a favor in improving subtitle translation quality. What’s more, a high level of translation quality can provide English learners with the most authentic learning materials compared to other traditional learning methods including pure pronunciation, idiomatic oral English and western cultures, simultaneously, expanding vocabulary, practicing listening ability and understanding western thinking mode through analyzing the differences between Chinese and western humors. Although many of the foreign TV plays surge quickly into the domestic market, many Chinese audiences still do not understand English well. In order to enjoy these programs, fansub groups are born at the right time. After the most remarkable sitcom, Friends has been introduced to China at 2002, the originator of the fansub groups, “F6 formula” was set up which then developed into Ren Ren, the Garden of Eden and Rag bear. When another situation comedy: Prison Breaker became popular inland at 2006, subtitle translation met its success and Chinese fansub group was named “A Aggressor of Breaking Cultural Barriers” by New York Times. As an organizer in translating subtitles, fansub groups play an important role in bridging the gap of cross-Cultural communication as well as breaking cultural obstacles. However, its current situation causes some worries that it is quite easy to identify
