Biophysicsdevelopsfastwiththefruitsofmodernphysicsandchemistry.Thereisawiderangeoffascinatingquestionsinunderstandinglifesystems.Duringtheseyears'studyatTsinghuaUniversity,Iconstantlytriedtoimprovemyselfthroughindependentreading.ThiskeptmewellinformedofthelatestdevelopmentinBiophysicswhichattractsmealot. E.Schrodinger'sfamouswork"WhatisLife"letmethinkalotofquestionsinBiophysics.Uptonow,physicisthavemadegreatsuccessinstudyingsimpleperiodiccrystals,butforthecomplexbiologicalstructurespossessbothaperiodicityandordersuchasDNA,therestillexistmanychallenges.WhytheseaperiodicmattercancontrolthelifestrictlyandpreciselyWhyasmallamountofnaturecatalyst-enzymecanbefarmoreefficientthanplentyofman-madecatalystsIsthegrowthoflifedeterminedbygeneticmaterialsorbyself-assemblyorbybothofthemFromthebook"LiquidCrystalsandBiologicalStructures"writtenbyGlennH.BrownandJeromeJ.Wolken,Igotdeeperunderstandingofbiologicalstructureswhichpossessbothmobilityandlong-rangestructureorder,respondtoavarietyofexternalstimulijustlikethepropertiesofliquidcrystals.Thestrikingarchitectureatthemolecularlevelshowsthereisacommonphysical-chemicaloriginforalllifesystems.Theorientedmoleculesinliquidcrystalsfurnishanidealmediumforcatalyticaction,particularlyofthecomplextypeneededtoaccountforgrowthandreproduction.Water,especiallytheweakhydrogenbondplayscriticalroleinallorganism.Itdeterminestheproteinfolding,stabilizesthedoublehelixstructureofDNA.Ifwesubstitutedeuteriumforhydrogen,thebiologicalsystemmaybedestroyed. Ontheotherhand,researchesinbiophysicsalsopushforwardthedevelopmentofphysics,leadtomoreapplicationsinbionicssuchasAIandneuralnetwork NowIamdoingmyDiplomaThesisattheInstituteofPhysics,ChineseAcademyofScience.MyTopicisaboutinvestigatingcoherentbackscatteringinarandomscatteringmediumbytheHe-Newlaser.Lightincertaindielectricmicrostructuresexhibitslocalizedmodes,similartothelocalizedwavefunctionofelectronsindisorderedsolids-AndersonLocalization.Thepropagationoflightinascatteringmediumcanbedescribedasrandomwalkofphotonswiththedirectionofeachsucceedingstepdeterminedbythelawsofprobability.TheTopicspansthedisciplinesofCondensedMatterPhysicsandQuantumOpties.Ihaveabsorbedalotofrelativeknowledgesuchasrandomwalk,perorationmodelsstochasticprocesstoprepareformyproject.IthinkthemethodIdynamicsofchemicalreactions. Sincemybackgroundfocusedonphysics,mathematics,electronics,lasersandoptics,Ihavetaughtmyselfsomebeginningbiologyandchemistrycoursesthisyear,discussedthemwithteachersintheDeptofBiologicalScienceandTechnologyatTsinghuaUniversityIwouldalsoliketotakemorebasiccoursesinthisfieldunderyourguidancetomakeupmydeficiency.FromcollegeguidesIlearnedwithpleasurethatyouhadstrongfacultywithavarietyofbackgroundinphysics,chemistry,mathematicsandelectricalengineering.Itisofteninthemulti-disciplinaryresearchthatcamethemostexcitingdiscovery.Yourgroupalsoprovidesoutstandingopportunitiesforcloseinteractionbetweengraduatestudentsandfaculty.ThatiswhyIdeemyourprogramasmybestchoice.Besides,IwanttolinkmodernbiophysicswithChineseMedicinetogetcomprehensiveunderstandingoflife.
